If you are the parent of small children(or ever have been) you are probably like me and often find yourself saying “Really? Are you serious? Is this actually happening? Is this my life?” If you are lucky you are laughing when you say this to yourself because if you are not laughing then you are probably crying and well, that’s no good. As you all know, I have a 3 ½ year old Autistic son, a 1 ½ year old daughter and have one more lovely little terrorist due to arrive in October. Yes, I affectionately refer to my children as terrorists… you can think what you like and judge me if you must but trust me … I mean it in the most loving of ways. They really are lovely though. No, really, I mean it.
Last week I stayed home with them on Monday because they were both sick and by 10am I was Googling “ do the terrible threes really exist?” To my comfort(and dismay) I found that many moms completely validate the terrible threes and call BS on the terrible twos. I may be joining that club. As we have learned over time, Blaze being Autistic doesn’t exempt him from things like terrible threes. He is still a very typical kid in many ways and it turns out that throwing himself on the floor every time he is told to do something is one of the ways he is making sure we know he is Autistic and typical. It was that day that I realized that I just may be a “misery loves company” kind of person. Not literally, I am not in misery but I found some strange comfort in knowing that other parents of non- Autistic and Autistic children were in the same boat as me.
This made me realize I need to start sharing more of my mommy stories because there have got to be other mothers of 2 children(one with Autism) under the age of 4 with a baby on the way working a full time job while living in rural South Texas on a farm , right? Ok, maybe not exactly in my situation but close(ish). So, I am going to give it a whirl and see if I can make you laugh …with me or at me… either way is fine with me. Here are the Mommy highlights of my long weekend:
1) Swimming in the pool with my kiddos. Ok, so it was really sitting in 2 feet of water with Adley( 1 1 ½ year old)stuck to me like glue because she is terrified of going under. But somehow it was still relaxing and also good to know someone still wants to stick to me like glue in all my bikini clad pregnancy glory. Oh yeah, I am sexy pregnant and I know it ;-). TOTALLY KIDDING!
2) Having Blaze be a good boy all weekend (with a few exceptions). And it is kind of a long story but we think there is a lot more good boy behavior in his future because we have decided to get tubes in his ears this week to avoid all of the ear infections he has been getting. This could be a huge thing for Blaze because the ear infections have been owning him for the past few months and he has been difficult to deal with. His sensory issues related to Autism and his language delay make the ear infections a huge deal!
3) Discovering that the grocery store now carries Baskin Robbins ice cream so I can eat all of the Mint Chocolate Chip and Butter Pecan ice cream my little heart and growing butt desire. Hey, I am pregnant so I can do what I want! And if you haven’t tried these… you must immediately but if you live in my town please don’t buy it all … leave some for me!
4) I had one fleeting memory of 4th of Julys past when I lived in San Diego. They were amazing yet none of them compares to the happiness I feel when I am cuddling with one or all of my babies.
Stay tuned and hope y’all had a great long weekend!
